New York, NY — September 15, 2026 — Educator and entrepreneur Elizabeth Alexander is expanding access to The Alexander Reading Method, an early-literacy curriculum developed through more than 25 years of work with children and educators. The program is designed to provide structured reading instruction for young learners while allowing educators to adapt instruction to individual learning needs.
Alexander is the founder of Reading in PreSchool, an educational organization that provides tutoring services in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Palm Beach and Greenwich, Connecticut, as well as online instruction.
The Alexander Reading Method focuses primarily on children between approximately 3.5 and 8.5 years old. The approach combines visual, written, spoken and interactive activities intended to give young learners repeated opportunities to practice foundational literacy skills.
A Structured Approach to Early Literacy
According to Alexander, her interest in early literacy developed through years of teaching and observing children encounter reading difficulties as they progressed through school.
After approximately 15 years of teaching children, Alexander developed an instructional approach that became The Alexander Reading Method. The curriculum incorporates books, writing activities, color coding, flashcards, large-font materials and brain-break exercises.
The program includes approximately 400 books arranged as part of a structured learning sequence.
Alexander says the method is designed to combine structure with flexibility. Educators can observe individual students and adjust instruction according to their responses while continuing to work toward established literacy objectives.
Reading and Confidence
A central focus of Reading in PreSchool is helping children develop foundational reading skills while maintaining a positive learning environment.
Alexander’s approach emphasizes repetition, encouragement and appropriately challenging activities. The stated goal is to help children become more comfortable with reading and develop confidence as they progress through their education.
The program is intended to complement different educational settings, including homeschooling, school-based education and additional tutoring.
Expanding Beyond Direct Tutoring
In addition to providing tutoring services, Reading in PreSchool has developed The Alexander Reading Method as a curriculum that can be purchased and implemented by individuals and schools.
The organization reports that approximately 40 teachers, many working part-time, have been involved in delivering the program and that around 600 students have completed it.
These figures are based on information provided by Reading in PreSchool. The organization also reports that many participating students have subsequently progressed through school, although individual educational outcomes can vary depending on a range of factors.
Alexander’s longer-term objective is to expand access to early-literacy instruction through collaboration with educators, organizations, philanthropists and other partners interested in children’s literacy.
Looking Ahead
Alexander continues to develop educational resources intended to support early reading instruction and teacher training. She also credits her personal practice of Transcendental Meditation with contributing to her creative process and development of educational ideas.
For Reading in PreSchool, the current focus remains on providing structured literacy instruction to young children while expanding the availability of The Alexander Reading Method beyond the organization’s direct tutoring locations.
