SEATTLE, Wash. – Seattle-based Korean tattoo artist Jay Han (Sangjo Han) is gaining national recognition across the American tattoo industry after earning top honors at major U.S. tattoo conventions while introducing a distinctly Korean artistic perspective to contemporary Black & Grey tattooing.

Originally trained in traditional Oriental painting in South Korea, Han has spent years developing a signature tattoo style that merges the expressive movement of Korean ink painting and Minhwa (traditional Korean folk painting) with contemporary Black & Grey tattooing. Rather than relying solely on photorealistic reproduction, his work emphasizes brush rhythm, composition, negative space, and the expressive qualities that have defined Korean painting for centuries.

Earlier this year, at the February 2026 Tacoma Tattoo Expo, Han received Second Place in the Small Black & Grey category, marking his first major recognition at an American tattoo convention and establishing his presence within the U.S. tattoo community.

That momentum continued at the July 2026 Portland Tattoo Arts Festival, a Villain Arts production and one of the largest touring tattoo festivals in the United States, where Han earned First Place in the Medium Black & Grey category.

The achievement is particularly significant because the Medium Black & Grey competition is widely regarded as one of the festival’s most competitive divisions, attracting many of the industry’s strongest Black & Grey tattoo artists. While contemporary Black & Grey tattooing has long been shaped by highly realistic portraits, Greco-Roman sculptures, wildlife realism, and other Western-inspired approaches, Han chose a fundamentally different artistic direction.

Instead of presenting a conventional realism piece, Han entered a large-scale tiger inspired by traditional Korean Minhwa and Korean ink painting. Through expressive brushwork, dynamic composition, and painterly movement, his work competed alongside some of the convention’s strongest Black & Grey artists and ultimately earned First Place.

By winning one of America’s most competitive Black & Grey tattoo competitions with a design rooted in traditional Korean artistic heritage, Han demonstrated that Korean visual traditions can compete—and succeed—alongside the dominant styles of contemporary Black & Grey tattooing. In addition to winning First Place, Han also served as an official competition judge during the July 2026 Portland Tattoo Arts Festival, evaluating entries submitted by fellow professional tattoo artists.
